Sainsbury’s Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

Public realm proposals for a new build store on an existing Sainsbury’s site within the Welwyn Conservation Area, which helps conserve the original Garden City layout for the town centre envisaged by Ebenezer Howard and Louis de Soissons. The public realm within the vicinity of the store had become degraded and neglected with restricted access and poor legibility. The proposals extend the pedestrianisation of Wigmores South, improving access and providing an area of open space for markets and events. Detailing of metal pergolas, decorative screens and pleached hornbeam tree supports are based on the design of the original metalwork for the Garden City. A living wall is incorporated on the store elevations to provide a new vision for bringing the garden into the city.
