The Forestry Commission is promoting public access to many of its woodlands and providing visitor facilities in the form of sustainable buildings with low environmental impact to impart information and refreshment, and to act as a focal point for visitors in the heart of woodland. The Landscape Partnership carried out site appraisals, tree surveys, ecological appraisals and worked alongside architects to produce landscape proposals for the planning applications.
Sites include Maulden Wood near Clophill, Hazelborough Wood near Silverstone, Southey Wood near Peterborough, Rowney Warren near Shefford, and Salcey Forest near Northampton. The buildings have been carefully located in their woodland settings and new links provided to the network of existing tracks for walking, cycling and horse-riding within the woodland.
