Flood Mitigation & Alleviation
The practice has experience over many decades in flood mitigation and water quality related projects. This has included designs for the Colne Barrier in Essex and restoration projects to improve water quality in the Norfolk Broads. In 2010 we received the Landscape Institute’s Policy Award and the Presidents Award for project of the year for a Sustainable Drainage Design Guide for Cambridge City Council. The guide was the first of its kind in the UK and intended for use by developers and their consultants where they are seeking adoption of SuDS within public open space. A number of specific SuDS methods are studied including ponds and wetlands, retention and infiltration basins, and swales and filter strips. The SuDS approach aims to reduce flood risk and whilst maximising landscape, amenity and biodiversity potential.
