Assistant Ecologist & Ecologist

Assistant Ecologist & Ecologist – Bedford / Woodbridge (Suffolk) / London

We are currently seeking to appoint an Assistant Ecologist or Ecologist in each of our Bedford and Woodbridge offices; it could be possible to work in our London office instead.  The position is an excellent opening for someone looking to progress their career in ecology, with future opportunities for advancement.  We would also consider applicants who may not meet all the requirements, but can instead show how they are ambitious, good at learning and keen to engage in ‘on-the-job’ training that we can provide.

Work undertaken will typically include:

  • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
  • Protected species survey and assessment
  • Reptile and/or newt translocation
  • Advising contractors on site
  • Biodiversity Net Gain Calculations

Requirements for the position:

  • At least Associate membership of CIEEM (Ecologist grade only)
  • A degree in a relevant discipline
  • Relevant professional ecological experience (2 to 3 years full-time experience working in ecological consultancy for Ecologist grade)
  • Experience and ability to carry out Phase 1 habitat surveys with reasonable botanical skills (e.g. FISC Level 3 or above for Ecologist grade)
  • Experience and ability to survey the more common protected species, such as reptiles and badgers.
  • Good writing skills with attention to detail and for Ecologist grade experience of writing technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisal
  • A driving licence and access to a car to travel to project sites
  • Right to work in the UK

Beneficial skills for the position:

  • A good understanding of the planning system
  • Good knowledge of current and developing wildlife policy and legislation
  • Knowledge of GIS, CAD and/or Adobe software programmes
  • One or more protected species survey licences e.g. great crested newts, bats especially for Ecologist grade

Applicants should be self-motivated, flexible, organised, good at working both independently and as part of a team and able to deliver work to a high standard.  Good verbal communication skills, a flexible approach to work and taking proportionate responsibility are important.

We are ideally looking to fill full-time positions, but we would consider part-time applicants. We are currently working mainly from home, but gradually returning to a regular regime in the office. We will then be trailing more flexible working, with a minimum of three days in the office and the remainder potentially available, by agreement, for working from home.

We offer the opportunity to join a friendly and committed team of multi-disciplinary professionals and a supportive working environment. Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary
  • Training and career development
  • Travel expenses include mileage at 45p per mile
  • A safe and enjoyable working environment
  • Voluntary workplace pension
  • ‘Cyclescheme’
  • A starting allowance of 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays)
  • Payment of professional memberships
