Development of a new contemporary quad for New College’s Savile Road site, providing student accommodation and new facilities for the adjoining New College School. The proposals include a new college tower to define the presence of the Savile Road site. This forms one of very few towers proposed to the centre of Oxford since the mid-20th century. The practice assessed the effects of the proposed development on the sensitive historic townscape character of Oxford and the influence to the ‘dreaming spires’ vision of Oxford. The work involved a detailed analysis of the effects of the proposed tower on the ten visual cones identified within the Assessment of the Oxford Visual Cones. The assessment also included other additional key views from the top of Sheldonian Theatre, the tower at the University of Church of St Mary, and other localised views.
