Masterplan and landscape design for a sample academy as part of a successful bid under the Academies Framework for three new academies for Medway Council. Proposals achieved BREEAM Excellent and landscape proposals were appraised as exemplar. The large existing school site contained mature trees and significant level changes.
The landscape proposals for the academy provide a diversity of spaces to support teaching. Two large courtyards were designed around creative arts and science and technology. A performance courtyard includes a catwalk and music paving and seating, and the Science and Technology Courtyard incorporates teaching spaces, fraction paving and a geology zone. SEN students have their own enclosed garden areas, including a produce garden. Other features include a perspective garden, terraced sports facilities, a kick about space and a wetland habitat area.
Winner at Medway Culture and Design Awards 2012, New Build category: “Raised the bar in excellence and design”.
