UTC Cambridge is a new and different type of education environment focussing on bio-medical and environmental science industries, serving 670 students aged 14 to 19. Cambridge UTC is located adjacent to Addenbrookes Hospital in the grounds of the existing Long Road 6th Form College. Although restricted to a narrow site the landscape proposals maximize the external space through careful positioning of the building and creation of a series of sub-spaces for social use.
The approach to landscape design takes account of the Protected Open Space designation, providing new planting and minimising loss of existing trees. A new allweather pitch to the south of the UTC site adds recreational value. Arboricultural and ecological surveys were carried out and habitat enhancements further mitigate the loss of some existing trees and improve the landscape structure of the wider sixth form college grounds.
