Substantial redevelopment of a Victorian psychiatric hospital on the eastern edge of Cambridge. The site was designated as a Conservation Area and located within the Cambridge Green Belt, necessitating a sensitive treatment of the retained hospital buildings and the existing grounds.
The first phase encompassed the refurbishment of the original buildings, located in a prominent position on a ridgeline, to a mix of educational and office uses. The landscape proposals responded to the extensive mature trees and the original parkland setting. Subsequent phases involved accommodating a series of elegant modern pavilions on a prominent sloping site, replacing a range of unsightly and ad hoc hospital structures. The landscape masterplan delivered a contemporary setting with strong structure planting and an individual character for each of the units.
