A new Motorway Service Area at Junction 46 of the A1(M) including a 126 bed hotel and extensive areas of structural landscape. The site was designed to use the very latest technology to reduce carbon emissions as well as provide ponds and woodland for wildlife habitats. Sustainable urban drainage has been designed into the scheme through the inclusion of swales and balancing ponds. Woodland, scrub and wildflower meadow habitats specifically designed for the local geological conditions (magnesium limestone). The hard landscape to the frontage of the amenity building has been designed for high pedestrian activity with open direct paths to the building retained at all times. Specimen Himalayan Birch for avenues directing pedestrian traffic through the space. Deterrent paving in the form of granite setts has been included around the amenity building to aid security and to reflect local geology.
