Haven Gateway GIS
The identification of the Haven Gateway Sub-Region as a growth point by the DCLG provided the impetus for the development of a Green Infrastructure Strategy. The area includes Ipswich, Colchester, Harwich and Felixstowe, extends along the North Essex and South Suffolk coasts, from Clacton to Aldeburgh, and has a unique and exceptional natural and historic environment that is expected to come under pressure from planned growth.
The strategy was prepared for the Haven Gateway Partnership, and
included the collation of baseline environmental data from over 30
organisations. A GIS model was used to help assess the interplay
of the five main components of green infrastructure:
and establish a holistic and co-ordinated spatial framework for the delivery of high quality multi-functional green infrastructure over the next 20-25 years, complementing and supporting planned housing and employment growth.
- physical resources and natural systems
- ecological assets
- landscape character
- historical and cultural assets
- access networks and recreational facilities
Areas of deficiency were identified together with an analysis of opportunities for the creation of new green spaces and green links.
