Kingfisher Court Mental Health Facility,
Kingsley Green, St Albans
Design development and construction of a new 86-bed (£42m) Mental Health Facility for adults within Kingsley Green, formerly Harperbury Hospital. A Landscape and Visual Appraisal and an Arboricultural Survey and Implications Assessment were initially undertaken for the site.
The landscape strategy was subsequently developed to address the openness of the Green Belt location, with the buildings set into the landform and woodland setting. The proposals demonstrated improvements to the local landscape character and provide an attractive and secure setting, with increased access to the wider grounds for the benefit of service users, staff and the general public. The design incorporates two communal gardens of differing character and a series of more intimate active and passive courtyard gardens for each of the wards, providing sport, recreational, horticultural and therapeutic opportunities for the service users. A courtyard associated with the café, provides an informal dining area with colourful planting and sculptures.
Winner of ‘External Environment’ category within the Patient Experience Class of the Building Better Healthcare Awards, 2015.
The project also won: ‘Mental Health Development’ category and the ‘Grand Prix Award’ in Building Better Healthcare Awards, 2015, and ‘Project of the Year’, Design in Mental Health Awards, 2015.
The judges commented: “A wide variety of different external areas have been created, offering quiet spaces as well as areas for socialisation and active engagements”
