Fordham Park and Walpole Road Underpass,
Fordham Park and Walpole Road Underpass in New Cross forms part of one of the Mayor’s Great Spaces. Its £1.8m regeneration has helped reconnect communities in an urban area fragmented by the barriers of roads and railways, and created a public space that is memorable, well used and much loved.
The community played a key role in the development of the project and this has resulted in a clear sense of ownership. The underpass is now a landmark and part of a journey described as “even better at night than during the day”.
The park has been transformed “from a dull patch of green where there was nothing much to do”, to a space where there is something for all.
Examples of positive reactions include:
“The transformation of Fordham Park is a joy to behold! The spring flowers are looking lovely and it is good to see so many more people cycling, jogging, strolling, sitting, playing and interacting so well. Thank you for all the work that has gone into making this possible.” AH, Samaritans
“I was somewhat taken back when a group of youths openly approached me (believing I was a part of the park regeneration team) to thank me for what we had done to the park. Having my office window look out onto the park I am witness to spectacular views of all types of people using the park in harmony, what a transformation enjoyed by all.” Ray, Project Manager: Costain BSF Team
