Waveney Sunrise Scheme,
Lowestoft Regeneration, Suffolk

The Landscape Partnership worked in partnership with Suffolk County Council and Waveney District Council to deliver the £14.7 million Waveney Sunrise Scheme to transform Lowestoft’s town centre and sea front, with a view to stimulate inward investment.

Initially, development of an urban design framework centred on the opportunities created by a proposed new by-pass and the desire to re-connect the run down retail area to the seafront. The proposals included traffic calming and re-direction, the re-use of attractive but derelict buildings, the creation of a new public open space, the restoration of the seafront promenade and the formation of improved connections between the seafront and the town.

Royal Plain is a key central element of this regeneration scheme, providing a stimulating and lively space for both daytime and evening use. The new space includes an interactive water feature with integrated lighting, helping to promote the area’s night-time economy. This focal area has proven extremely popular, and is used by residents and tourists alike.
