Normansfield Hospital Teddington

This Victorian hospital was originally established by Dr Langdon Down for the care of Down’s syndrome patients. A planning application was prepared to convert the historic buildings for residential use, replace the more recent buildings with new development and establish areas of public and private open space.

The site was located within a Conservation Area and included Listed Buildings, Metropolitan Open Land and a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. Landscape and townscape appraisals were prepared prior to the development of alternative site layouts in collaboration with the architects. A landscape master plan, details and management plan were prepared along with a proof of evidence for Section 78 appeal.

Implementation stages followed, including environmental protection, detail design and the incorporation of a sculpture to commemorate Dr Down’s work.
